Manila —— The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) kicked off the National Women’s Month Celebration during their flag raising ceremony on March 5, 2018 at the Labor Governance Learning Center. With the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns being the host, the flag raising ceremony was filled with presentations in honor of Filipino women, especially women workers.

This year’s theme — “We Make Change Work for Women” highlights the empowerment of women as active contributors to and claimholders of national development. It was identified by the Board Members of the Philippine Commission on Women and the Inter-Agency Technical Working Group last 2017 and will be used until 2022.

Based on the said theme, the DOLE Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III who is also the Chairperson of the DOLE Gender and Development Focal Point System proudly commended the Department for the untiring efforts to uplift the conditions of women through the different programs and services.

Thus, Secretary Bello said, “In the DOLE, we have a share in ‘making change work for women’ thru the implementation of our programs which directly or indirectly affects women in the workforce. We have several programs geared towards improving the status of women”.

Secretary Bello added, “That, I think is ‘making change work for women’ in action. By ensuring that our women workers are protected, we can hopefully prevent similar cases of abuses and maltreatment especially to our female migrant workers in other countries. While this does not guarantee a win-win situation at all times, we could at least demand a leverage by which our workers, in general, are accorded protection”.

Before concluding the ceremony, Secretary also gave everyone something to ponder and work about, “In the future. We hope we can improve our data collection in order to show how do women benefit from this process? Do women comprise a sizeable numbers of these workers? If not, why? This is just another area where we in the Department can assist in making change work for women”.
