This April, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) through the Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC) and DOLE Regional Office No. IV-A, and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Nasugbu, Batangas for the Social Amelioration Program-Sugar Workers Information and Tracking System (SAP-SWITS) will be finalized. The MOA will be signed soon by Regional Director Henry John S. Jalbuena of the DOLE Regional Office No. IV-A and Nasugbu Mayor Antonio Jose Barcelon.
Prior to the MOA, the BWSC initiated a mock test of the SAP-SWITS last 29 March 2019 in Nasugbu, Batangas. This project aims to provide the Department with the right information on the current work situation of sugar workers with regard to the vulnerability of the nature of their work.
Mayor Barcelon expressed his approval to the said project. “I fully support this project and I am willing to sign the MOA once it is finalized,” he stated during his meeting with the representatives from the BWSC.
With the finalization of the MOA with the LGU, the Bureau will be able to access information on the sugar workers and identify the benefits that they are enjoying as well as create policies that can bridge any gap that may arise.
The LGU on the other hand, will provide assistance in coordinating with the barangay officials. They also committed to provide manpower and logistical support to the field coordinators during the implementation of said project.
The project will officially start in May 2019.
